You're usually safe with retail Adaptec products. But OEM Adaptec
products on mainboards or bundled with PCs are usually SOL because of
little firmware/BIOS changes. This is the market that Adaptec has bred
-- lots of variant OEM products that are NOT compatible with their
retail versions.
I've got some older FastSCSI Adaptec cards that work great with
aic7xxx. But I've got a number of OEM mainboards and Adaptec products
that don't -- and even a retail 2940UW that doesn't work with _any_
aic7xxx I've thrown at it. All-in-all there's a _lot_ of Adaptec
hardware on my shelf (probably close to $1K) that does NOT work with
Linux, or even some newer Windows versions for that matter.

The US government could be 100x more effective, and 1/100th the
Constitutional worry, if it dictated its policy to Microsoft as
THE MAJOR CUSTOMER it is, and not THE REGULATOR it fails to be.
