Did you say you are getting the same issues with those cards?

How's your SCSI termination?  Are you using a separate, active
terminator, or one of the devices?  That Plextor is an SE device, your
Ultra160 drive is an LVD.  You probably only need SE termination, but
you never know with Ultra80/160 drives -- they may be looking for LVD
termination.  If you don't have an LVD terminator, try putting your HD
at the end of the bus and using its on-board termination.  Make sure it
is providing terminator power.

Some BIOSes beep if you don't have video plugged in.

SCSI termination is usually the culprit if the issue is random.  I like
to use separate, active terminators -- even on an internal IDC50 cable,
but especially on 68-pin one.
