No, this is not "someone else".  That is the US mirror of mplayer, see:

So, it appears that those are "official" RPM's, right from the source.  
They sound better to me because:

1) they are official
2) they have RPM's optimized for i686, athlon, ...
3) they have the latest version, 0.90-pre5, as a RPM.
   (instead of 0.90-pre4 at freshrpms)

Does freshrpms version support more codec's or some other advantage?
