>From my understanding what many consider a "Gnome theme" is really a GTK theme. Gnome is window manager independant unlike KDE so Gnome theme packages don't really change the behavior of anything dealing with the window manager -- Just GTK itself.
Really what you need to customize Gnome is a GTK theme and a seperate window manager theme. KDE doesn't really have this "problem" as KWM is the only WM that you use with KDE typically.
