THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (26 active KLUG participants)

Hosting Your Own Domain (DNS, SMTP, & WWW)
by Robert G. Brown

We deal with domains on the Internet all the time, but few
really understand how they are created, or how the whole
thing works. It really helps to understand how all of this
works, even if you are not looking to operate your own domain.
In this presentation, Bob will wear several hats. As domain
owner, he applies for domain names with a registrar, and
designates a DNS (Domain Name Service) server. As DNS
administrator, he sets up the domain, and learns a few
lessons along the way.

As network administrator for his domains, he will show us
what he must do to get servers in the domains to work, and
as application developer and user, he shows us what he must
do to use the new domains. As expected, this was a very
informative and entertaining presentation, suitable for the
prospective domain owner or any user of internet services
who wants to know more about what is really going on.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
**********************
BOB BROUGHT THE HATS!!! Oh yeah! Robert started off with
a focus slide the stated, "LINUX: Over 34% more geeky than
any other operating system." - J.D. Powers Compared were
WebTV - MacOS - Win9x - Win NT - Solaris - OS2 - Linux !!!
First, wearing a 10 gallon Stetson like those worn by the
Dallas, Texas sheriff deputies in the 1960's, Bob explained
how you REGISTER your internet domain. < search ICANN >
Several registrars were discussed. Using slides on the
overhead projector we saw visual examples using data from
the domain www.greengeese.org.

Next came out the authentic Russian fur hat, he described
the concerns and configuration of the DNS server. This
defines the name in text format instead of "dot quad"
(ie. 207.89.144.152). Would it be fun to remember and
type in web address numbers. We saw a sample of the DNS
configuration.

Out came a grey stocking cap with a sub-zero face opening,
now he was portraying the one who configures the domain
settings for the Apache web server and the sendmail server...
FTP too! We saw examples of how virtual hosts are set up for
Apache. Next we explored the file sendmail.cf in
/etc/mail/local-host-names. We saw how to set this up.

The last hat was a sporty Merril Lynch Official (Yr?)
Olympic Sponsor baseball cap. Now he was the acting as the
application developer publishing or coding the domain for its
intended function. Producing the software code that runs on
the domain including scripts, libraries and programs.

He concluded with questions and the first one sent everyone
into laughter. The question was about how he had registered
and set up DNS on his dial-up connection <before he got DSL &
cable too> servers. Bob put on both the Stetson and the
Russian fur hat at once because the question involved both
aspects. He soon took the heavy pair off for comfort reasons.
He had several more questions about DNS! He recommended the
Washington University FTP server software that comes with Red
Hat to an inquiry about internet file transfers.

After a closing and excessive applause, Bob released the group
to break into discussion format. He still had several general
questions being posed and specific discussions evolved while
others KLUG'ites mingled and openly conspired together.

Robert Brown is a founding member, past chairman, the current
publicity director of KLUG, and has over 25 years experience
in software development in numerous environments, disciplines,
and industries. An intermittant user of UNIX systems for over
15 years, Bob has developed applications with Linux in in the
course of his professional and volunteer activities. He can
also be seen cycling the Kal-Haven trail, wandering around,
perpetrating nature photography, or traveling to some fairly
unusual places. Recently, he was elected to chair a major
SIG of the ACM.

* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 06/18/2002
********************************************************************
Ethernet and IP Networks
by Adam Williams

An intermediate level overview of Ethernet, the world's
most common LAN technology, and IP, the protocol that
makes the internet go. Understanding ethernet and IP
is essential to troubleshooting in today's networked
world. This presentation includes example commands for
UNIX/Linux, Micro$oft Windows, Cisco IOS, and Nortel CLI.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan,
with a couple of hundred workstations, running Linux
and other operating systems. Not only does he deal
with domain issues at work, but he is also the owner of
the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on the main KLUG
mailing list, both presenting and solving some of the
most challenging networking and configuration problems.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. Various upgrades and enhancements are
being applied currently, including three new workstations and
other hardware upgrades. Contact "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>
to help out or for more info. Get on the Boogies Volunteer

internet access for KLUG members attending meetings at the Chamber.
Lots more additions planned between KLUG and K C of C. A newsgroup
server, web server, networking, and eventually EVERYTHING! The
synergy is peaking! Hardware is being installed and KLUG
volunteers are needed. Contact "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>

IV. GENERAL KLUG ANNOUNCEMENTS

WHAT IS KLUG? -
KLUG is a volunteer group formed by and for LINUX
system users in the Kalamazoo Michigan area. We
support, promote, and develop activities related
to the use, study, and application of LINUX in the
local community.

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

IF YOU KNOW OF ADDITIONAL LINKS that should be included
