No, general Linux ATA/IDE DMA driver incompatibilities/issues with the
chipset and hard drive.  What IDE controller (or mainboard chipset) and
hard drive?

Probably because the hard drive was running in PIO (programmed I/O) mode
instead of DMA (direct memory access) by default in the RedHat 6.1
kernel.

Try forcing PIO in the beginning of your /etc/rc.sysinit script with:
   /sbin/hdparm -d0 -u0 /dev/hdX (where X is = { a, b, c, ... })
