I'd concur,  that message usually indicates a dying drive,  or at least 
flakey power and/or very bad cabling.

It is possible it could be a driver issue, but IMHO, that is unlikely.  
Try installing an old ditro (RH6.2) and see if that works.  Also make sure 
you pick the "check for bad blocks" option when you create your 
filesystems.
