Fight SPAM Now!
by Robert G. Brown

We all get it, and we don't like it! How can we get
rid of it? Learn a few tools and techniques that can
turn us all into world-class spam fighters. Let's all
work together to drive spam and spammers off the net.
Also, we took a look at what a sustained effort,
and a little persistance can do.

See the .pdf at http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
-----------------------
Bob gave us the definition of SPAM as Unsolicited Commercial
E-mail (UCE) and told us why we should regard SPAM as a BAD
THING or the unauthorized use of our resources. Using a
Red Hat Linux OS driven laptop (operated by Bruce Smith)
and the KLUG SVGA projector, we reviewed what doesn't work
and what does work to combat SPAMMERS and their SPAM.

I. What Doesn't Work in SPAM Fighting

    A. Outlaw SPAM - why it won't work

    B. Filter SPAM - why this is NOT a solution

II. How to Effectively Fight SPAM

    A. Persistence Pays Off in Fighting SPAM

	1. Report of SPAM frequency by month & year
	    a. Positive results w/ visible decline of SPAM

    B. Your Allies are the Postmasters

	1. e-mail server administrators (Postmasters)
	    a. Avoidance of 'black listing' for SPAM

    C. Postmaster's Allies

        1. SpamCop spamcop.net Black Hole Lists

	2. ORDB www.ordb.com	Open Relay Testing (remailers)

    D. SPAM Fighting Tools - Forget 'PLEASE REMOVE' & report them!

	1. Adcomplain - examine headers and YOU generate complaints
	    a. Determine origin of e-mail - looking at FULL header info
		1. What the header info means and identity forgery
            b. Send complaints to SpamCop for black listing
		1. Send complaints to offending ISP too
		2. Abuse@ vs. postmaster@ for reporting.
	    c. http://www.rdrop.com/users/billmc/adcomplain.html
	        1. Next version should be much improved / more effective

	2. SpamCop - you send SPAM to them and they hammer them for you
	    a. Register and get an account where you forward SPAM

	3. See also http://www.abuse.net/tools.html [ 14 tools ]

	4. See also http://www.mail-abuse.com

III. Questions and Answers

Bob took questions during the presentation and held an active
Q & A session after his main presentation. Questions were asked
about the ethics, philosophy, and legalities of SPAM! This was
a well organized and practical solution path for a common problem.
The large crowd was eager for knowledge and they got what they
came for! We are now empowered to strike back at SPAMMERS!

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!

===============================================================

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!

The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We have received notice that they are proceeding with the
processing of our request. We hope to hear from them
REAL SOON with notice of our charitable deductibility.
Charitable and tax-exemption status is routinely granted
to educational not-for-profit organizations. This should
help us attain our financial goals. We need working
capital for increased Linux promotional activities.

WOW!!! STILL NO WORD FROM THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE!
STILL NO 501(c)(3) ISSUED TO KLUG!!!

The Kalamazoo Linux Users Group would like to
thank the Law firm of Kreis Enderle Callander &
Hudgins for their generousity toward KLUG. Matt
DePerno has made contributions of his time to
assist us in our attempts to achieve 501(c)(3) tax
status with the IRS!!!

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.
Bring a friend... who was disappointed by a proprietary OS!

THANKS to ARMSTRONG INTERNATIONAL, INC. for providing their
much appreciated IT Resources to support KLUG and Linux.

THANKS to KALAMAZOO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE for providing their
well appointed facilities for our meetings. Jas Networks
has donated a 2.3 Mbit connection that we used during the
meetings to allow attendees to connect by wire and also
wireless 802.11b network connections through the Michigan
Wireless Network. Many projectors, flip chart easel and
projection screens have been made available.
