I picked up a:  CT6840- Creative Labs Video Blaster Webcam III - USB 1.0

for $15.00 and it works great under Linux.

It does 640x480, auto focus, auto bright depending on room lighting.
I don't know if you can still buy them, but it might be worth a look.
