I recommend sendmail,  the well tested MTA.

Yes, we use IMP with great success.  The real advantage of IMP is the
integration with Turba, the address book of address books.  Power users
demand a good address book, and Turba delivers (import, export,
cumulative queries from multiple sources, etc...)

IMP scales very well (using System V shared memory sessions), and is
quite peppy.
