PHP is open, which doesn't matter so much until you get to the extensions. 
Extensions for .Net, CORBA, myriad databases, etc... are all "included" in PHP.
 Last I looked several similair modules for ASP cost extra $$$ either from M$ or
a third party.

Syntactically, etc... ASP and PHP are very simialar.  There are even ASP->PHP
converters,, although I've never used one.
