Big advantages of PHP:

It works on nearly all platforms and web servers
The code is very portable between platforms
It's not controlled by Microsoft
It's easy to learn
it's very similar to perl
It's very similar to c
It can be object oriented if you desire
It's free (speech)
It's free (beer)
Makes database access REAL easy (and it supports lots of them)
Can be embedded into HTML very easily
