If you re-read a few points, you'll see the exact analogy I make to
office suites.

It all depends on how you define "Linux will be a popular choice for
[BLAH]" ...

If you mean "reads proprietary formats 100% perfect and can use all 3rd
party software made for them," then NO.

In the case of office suites, this would mean it won't "replace" MS
Office as 100% proprietary compatible (although MS Office cannot even do
that with itself), and AutoDesk AutoCAD for CAD.

If you mean "provides equivalent functionality with proprietary
software, offers new innovations and capabilities that proprietary
software doesn't, and still is able to read some-to-most proprietary
files," then YES.

In the case of office suites, this would mean OpenOffice offers
equivalent functionality, and even a number of features that MS Office
doesn't. Same deal with various CAD/CAM/EDA products versus AutoCAD in
for CAD.

Lastly, Linux _is_ very "mainstream" for markets that have been
traditionally UNIX. It has been shown that this is not changing and
Microsoft has _failed_ to sell Wintel as a replacement for RISC/UNIX
workstations with the advent of Lintel.
