I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (19 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Meet AMANDA!
by Stu Gillis

Stu Gillis presented an overview of the Advanced Maryland
Automatic Network Disk Archiver. AMANDA is a backup system
that allows the administrator of a LAN to set up a single master
backup server to back up multiple hosts to a single large
capacity tape drive. AMANDA uses native dump and/or GNU tar
facilities and can back up a large number of workstations
running multiple versions of Unix. Recent versions can also
use SAMBA to back up Microsoft Windows 95/NT hosts."

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
************************
Stu used a Linux OS powered laptop running the K Office
application with the KLUG SVGA projector to teach us the
key aspects of AMANDA! He told us that over 1,500 major
users report organizational use of this data backup Open
Source software. Stu felt AMANDA was a solid Linux and
Unix solution. His organization depends on its function.

AMANDA uses native dump or the GNU Tar archiver to back up
whole networks with multi-platform users. It even backs
up the Microsoft format systems using the SaMBa server. It
has a built-in scheduler that adjusts itself for optimum
usage.

Stu showed us how to install, configure, set up tape labels
and rotation, estimate capacity needs, and restore data.
The next version will reportedly handle encryption of the data
using ssh and other Unix tools. We heard stories of how Stu
implemented this application for his employer and some of
the notable considerations he encountered.

Data security through back up and restore procedures can
often be overlooked as a REQUIRED system utility until the
inevitable situation arises where restoration is needed.
Over and over network dependent operations have discovered
the value of safeguarding their OS, applications, and data.
It is not IF you will need back up data, but WHEN! Don't
get caught without at least two archives of everything.
After one system 'rebuild from scratch' nightmare, you'll
never forget to make sure your data is secure again.

Stu recommends these references:

Stu Gillis is a System Administrator for the Kalamazoo branch
of Venturi Technology Partners, Inc. He is Vice Chairperson of
KLUG and a strong supporter of Open Source and Linux. Also
known for his Linux promotional contributions at KLUG public
outreach demonstrations (he earned the nickname 'showguy').
An appreciated contributor to many of KLUG's special projects.

     NOTE -

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 10/29/2002

Halloween Party: Geek Jeopardy!!!
by Adam Williams assisted by Brian Ritz

Come join KLUG for it's annual Halloween party, this year
including Open Source jeopardy!!! Prizes, Trivia, and Food!

but the network he deals with is all over Michigan,
with a couple of hundred workstations, running Linux
and other operating systems. Not only does he deal
with domain issues at work, but he is also the owner of
the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on the main KLUG
mailing list, both presenting and solving some of the
most challenging networking and configuration problems.

Brian Ritz works at UPS and also as a shipping department
specialist at ETMA Supply in Grand Rapids. Brian has been
working with Linux almost exclusively as a user of the
Whitemice.Org network. He holds a degree in Finance from
Grand Valley State University.

=============================================================
PARTY SUMMARY FROM 2001!!! <<<KLUG FLASHBACK>>>
Halloween Party: Geek Jeopardy
By Adam Williams (KLUG Program Director)

There were many boxes with assorted large pizza's, several
gallons of carbonated beverages and very nice homemade
brownies (Stu's kids made these delights!) That pizza was
hot and tasty!

We had an opportunity to strut (or should that be struct?) our
geek plummage in a round of Geek Jeopardy! This included five
questions from each of the following topics: GNOME, the Kernel,
Logging, Jargon, Slashdot Polls, PAM & NSS, Printing, LDAP,
Personalities, /bin, Network Terms, Geek Flicks, Debugging Tools,
Net History, WAN, Ethernet, and, of course, Misc. The questions
were worth 64, 128, 256, 512 or 1024 points. Those 1024 point
questions were REAL difficult! Bruce took us through almost
all of the topic's 1024 point questions and he held the topic
choice for about a dozen of these. We broke into three teams
of four KLUGites. Brian did an excellent job of keeping score
and Adam was the master of ceremonies - reader of the questions!
Adam and Brian did a great job of getting everyone involved
and helping with the humor! Vanna White would have been proud
of Brian!

     T E A M B W O N G E E K J E O P A R D Y
Team B - consisting of Dirk, John, Richard and Robert G. were
the grand winners with a score of 4,096! Team A had 1,436 and
Team C had a score of minus 1,728! There were several standouts
on the losing teams that made great attempts to overcome Team B's
obvious superiority! I saw everyone laughing and having a great
time... the side comments were priceless!

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.
