Redhat works fine with Charter (I have Charter at home).
You only need to tell Redhat to use DHCP.

You said you are doing this with an "older workstation".
Does that mean you are unplugging a different PC and
plugging your cable modem into the "older workstation"?

Whenever you switch the network cable from the cable modem
from one network card to a different NIC, you have to
power off the cable modem, wait a few minutes, and power
it back on before it will work. This is OS independent.
