There are a couple of other tweaks here that may prove beneficial:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU/index.html

Specifically helpful:

$ startx -- -dpi 140 -depth 16 # v4.x syntax ## Season to taste

and:

setting default-point-size = 140 (e.g.) in /etc/X11/fs/config along with the
other config tweaks (swapping the 100/75dpi fonts, etc.)

Note the Red Hat specifics in the URL.

There are specific tweaks for Netscape/Mozilla also.
