I am using RH 7.3 and OOo 1.0.1 with absolutely no problems so I do know
that it works.

When saving, can you select a directory such as your /HOME directory
where it is known that you have write permisions? And it still crashes?
If so then the install and/or the download is suspect.

Did you check the md5sum of your download?

When you installed, did you run "./setup -net" from the OOo "install"
directory as root? (that would be the "install" directory of the
untarred OOo download) Then did you do a workstation install as a
regular user from the newly installed OOo directory, someplace like
"/usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.0/setup" or "/opt/OpenOffice.org1.0/setup"
(without the -net parameter)?

setup -net is done by root.
a workstation setup is done be a regular user.

Be sure to read the "Installation_Guide.pdf" in the install directory of
the untarred OOo download for multiuser installs.

I have no experience installing across the network for user workstation
installs. All of my installs are local multiuser installs then local
workstation installs.
