No, I've run OO without Java before (without any saving problems).

It's most likely something in the user's settings causing the problem.

1)  Try creating a brand new user on the system, and see if they can
save in OO.  If that works, blow away all the local settings in the home
directory for the user that's having the saving problems.

2)  Try saving to a directory that you know the user has write access
to, like their home directory.
