Linux for Beginners
by Dirk Bartley

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================

BEGINNER'S MEETING SUMMARY:
****************************
Dirk did the routine announcements and introductions for the
KLUG Beginner's Night festivities and we were off in various
directions installing and tweaking Linux systems with a
variety of Linux OS's. We saw a least 4 laptops that have
been successfully running Linux already that were brought in
to assist in the installation event, if needed.

We counted no less than nine (9) machines, three laptops and
six workstation/servers, having full Linux installations or
various tweaks and explorations being performed. There was
interesting communication going on regarding the installs and
several other Linux related subjects. The Linux OS's being
tweaked or installed included Suse v7.1, Suse v8.0, Red Hat
v7.3, and certainly... the latest BS-Ware. We even saw two
Linux advocates in the far corner with laptops running Beehive
Linux which has been optimized for the 80686 Intel processor!

"WOOOHOOO!!! It installed successfully!"

We saw at least one installer, and there were others, yell with
glee at the successful completion of their Linux installation.
OpenOffice v1.01 was running on several of those Linux machines!
Two of the machines were being set up to help out in the political
season that is now underway, desktop workstations for Tom George's
Michigan senatorial election campaign.

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 09/10/2002

server-side Perl scripting and MySQL programmer for
InGenius that was subsequently acquired by a San
Fransico based web portal innovator. He continues in
