This is sort of an advocacy response but -

If hardware support is an issue then I'd have to say "Windows 2000". 
The Macs are *VERY* nice but there are lots of devices that don't play
with them.  

The Mac software is easy to use,  I was able to plop down in front of
one and patch an ugly sequence together (ugly because I'm no artist, not
a software deficiency).  Whatever package that comes on them by
default,  don't recall the name.  And the G4 processor doesn't hurt,  as
it is pretty good at such things.

But if you want *powerful* stuff then Linux is your platform.  I've read
posts from people who have moved from Mac to Linux because the freely
available software is so immensely powerful.  Maybe I can dig up some
URLs.  Comparable software for either Mac or WinY2k is going to cost you
sacks of cash.  Hardware support isn't bad,  you just need to check the
list *before* you buy.

So it depends on your needs, as always.
