Yes, it seems to work now, thanks for the info!

Some tips for anyone else trying it:

READ and UNDERSTAND the documentation FIRST.  If you try to install it
and set it up via the GUI without knowing what you're doing (as I did :)
you could run into trouble.  The terms "local" and "remote" do NOT mean
local and remote!  

I created a local evolution server and a remote evolution client,
WRONG!  It started syncing to myself in an infinite loop, duplicating my
address book over and over in itself!  Oops!  :-)

And if you have more than two PC's you're trying to sync:  create
separate connections, running on different ports, with different keys,
for each pair.  I was trying to sync my work desktop to both my laptop
and my home computer.  It doesn't work if you give both "clients" the
same setup, even if they are not connecting at the same time.

And if you've manually added the same contacts to two different
machines, the first time you sync you will get duplicates everywhere,
which must be manually deleted and synced again.  (understandable)
