I read a article yesterday in wich a comparison of linux distro's was
made. SuSE pro was #1, followed by RedHat with just a minor difference.
It appears that SuSE having the best new hardware support, and brings
the most programs, but has the highest price. I must say I work with
SuSE since version 6.1, somewhere in the late '90's. I have worked with
Caldera and RedHat before that. I personally prefere SuSE for its easy
installation process and its tools to manage. I know the latter (Yast)
is something that divides the Linux users in SuSE lovers and Haters. But
it works for me. And there are always possibilities to go around Yast.
(Yet Another Setup Tool). There is also YOU, Yast Online Update, witch
makes it easy to install new packages after a security warning of for
just an update. SuSE also offers a very good web-site. And a good
security warning system (as others will have). I can't translate whole
the article for you but I will mention some details of the article here.

I know this a just a comparison, others will have a different outcome.
Prices are likely to be different locally.

I don't think SuSE would be a bad chooise, nor would be any other.
Except for Lindows what is not doing what is (was) promissed for its M$
compability, but who wants that anyway? If you do you should take a look
at SuSE Linux Office Desktop BTW. I have read somewhere else that in
Germany the government of Munich is using it 14,000 clients!

I work with Suse 7.2 (Laptop) and 8.1 (desktop) myself now, and am very
pleased with it. SuSE 8.2 also mounts usb devices automatically, showing
an icon on the desktop. For work I use an older version of mandrake on
wich usb support is still giving me trouble. I don't know how other
distro's handles usb, likewise I suppose.

Hope this helps.

Bert.
