SuSe has YAST, RedHat has up2date, Debian has apt-get, etc... It is a bit of a
problem if you have to support multiple distros.
I'd recommend using Red Carpet for updates. It is available for all the major
distros, has both a very nice GUI and command line interface, you can run your
own package cache, etc.... For a small fee you can get a login/password that
enables "Express" service in Red Carpet where by you use download servers
especially for Express customers - these are always very fast.
