Here's my suggesetion for getting your feet wet with Linux -- hit IRC. That's
how I got started with it, and really learned a lot in my first year.

Grab an IRC client and hit an Efnet server and join up #linuxhelp. You can
ask your questions, and see the questions -others- are asking at the same time.
Now and again you'll bump into somebody who's attempting the same thing you are.

If you're adept at absorbing triva, this works really well IMHO. Just watching
the converstations going by about real problems helps you get a nice wide range
of exposure to different problem domains and different ways of handling them.

I'm not quite the regular there that I once was, but I still head there now
and again to help out a few others and pick up a few new tips and trick while
I'm there.

Not exactly a "book" but still a good resource that's often never brought up.
