Yeah, it can be expensive. I use Cylix products for that.
Protection for 100MHz on RJ45 with all pins protected is almost $100
A 24 port protected patch panel (surge supression on each port) is over $700

Considering the longevity can be several years or until the first hit :)  it SOMETIMES is worth the investment.
The cheap jury-rigging way to protect is to tie a knot in your cable at each end, wrap it in foil and ground the shield on one end.  It may not work, but it would be fun to try.
