Thanks for all the great responses, on surge suppression and WLAN's. KLUG
rocks!!!

RE:RJ45 surge suppression.

I am glad to find that my paranoia about RJ45 surge suppression is not
delusional.

When I think about all those cat 5 cables running out of my server room
going in every direction, I think what a lovely antenna system to suck in
and concentrate stray emf (fortunately, I don't have any single really long
runs to sweat over). We had a tornado skip over our buildings and take out
all the power lines, but so far no really electrifying experiences. But, I
make sure I have good surge suppression going to my servers.

For the workstations, I am pretty much dealing with RJ45 surge issues as I
add computers to the network or replace UPS's where the replacement battery
costs 2/3rds the price of a new UPS that has RJ45 surge protection. I just
ordered three computers yesterday, and as always I include a UPS. You ask
the typical sales person and they haven't a clue about RJ45 protection. APC
wants you to buy a UPS and a separate RJ45 surge suppressor. TripLite is
hard to find spec's on. Belkin's web site is so outdated that it still lists
discontinued UPS. It just seems that every time I need one, I have to go
begging to find any UPS'es that have RJ45 surge suppression.

I guess that is the price I have to pay for being a paranoid sysadmin.
