I actually looked it up and it's called "Tiny Linux", it's a small Linux
distro made especially for old recycled computers. Here's the url if
you want to check it

out:http://tiny.seul.org/en/

I used a SuSe CD (about 2000 vintage) to install command line only (no
windows manager) to an old hard drive using my more advanced pc, which
actually has a CD drive in it. Then switched out the hard drive to an
old
486 8 MB RAM fossil. It worked, at least vi, command line, and the
modem
worked until I played around with configuring things a little too much.
 I
don't think it was optimally configured for an old clunker though. I
didn't have RH at the time but that might work too.

I also tried a floppy disk distro which did a surprisingly good job in
command line mode. I believe the name started with Tiny, but I don't
remember now.

It was a fun experience but I have to say the machine is sitting in a
corner collecting dust. I am saving it for future use as a firewall
(maybe). If you are willing to work with text mode and the command
line
the old machines can still do quite a bit, FTP, text editing, text
only
net surfing, for example.
