Are you sharing the home directories via NFS? The gconfd {registry}
exists in the users homedirectory and you may be experiencing a file
locking problem. Of course this is only for gnome, I don't know about
KDE. I'd poke about about on the second machine while the
hanging-blue-screen is there with fuser in the user's homedir and see if
you find anything suspicious.

Check .xsession-errors as well.
