I've done it.

Yep.

You'll learn allot, maybe more than you want to know.

You'll need to start with basic packages - glib, libxml2, etc..  then
work your way up to undergirding packages pango, bonobo, etc.. then
finally up to core packages, say gconfd, libgnomeprint, libgnomeprintui,
libgnomeui.  THEN you start building packages you actually see - panel,
gnome-terminal, etc...
