I've read about a program called "dvdrecord" (similar to cdrecord,
except for creating DVD's).  I don't have a DVD writer, so I've never
tried it.  Google says it's here:   http://www.nongnu.org/dvdrtools/

One other thing, I've also read that the ONLY safe way to backup data on
DVD is to use DVD-RAM.  All my reading says that DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R,
DVD+RW, etc.  is not dependable enough, and/or doesn't last long enough,
for backups.  I hope your NEC 1100ND does DVD-RAM ...
