Linux for Beginners
by Todd Pillars

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

http://kalamazoolinux.org/meetings/installform.html
Contact the KLUG Installmasters for more information:

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
**************************
Tonight's KLUG meeting was well attended and we had some new
and returning participants show up! Todd Pillars did the KLUG
introduction and brought us up to date on current developments.
Check the end of the KLUG News Flashes for some important club
announcements.

Andrew Thompson, the KLUG install master, was busy helping
Johnathan Roman get BS-Ware 9 installed on a Gateway P3 laptop.
They overcame some obstacles and it looked like a successful
install. I did hear that M$ was reluctantly removed from the
hard drive to enable the install. He can always put M$ back
on its own partition again. There was some sort of problem
with the boot device redirection that made the decision to
wipe the disk a best choice scenario. Linux was installed!!!

The rest of the group broke into discussion groups and engaged
in helping those who were in need of configuration help. You
could see that there were many happy Linux users sharing their
knowledge and expertise with Open Source software and Linux.
There was one group demonstrating CD-Burning in KDE and Gnome.
Bruce was helping to get a laptop to recognize multiple input
devices. The new attendees were greeted and given some idea
of what KLUG is all about.

While the number of install requests was low this month, it
still makes one wonder if the ease of installation of Red Hat
v9 has made configuration and hardware issues more of a focus
than actually installing it. Installation was not like this
in the early days of Linux. Open Source GNU Linux has come
a long way from the early 1990's. It is not just for computer
network administrators and IT specialists. Your Aunt Martha
might pick up a PC at Wal-Mart for $200 that runs Linux. The
times they are a changing, and it is all for the better!

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Todd Pillars is the Chairperson of KLUG! His first PC
was a 1981 TRS-80 Model 3 2.03Mhz, 16K ram, 5 1/4 floppy
running TRS-DOS and QBASIC. In 1997 he started running
a web development company that hosted web sites with Red
Hat 5.2. He was named the Executive Director of Southwest
Michigan Information Technology Institute in 2003. SMITI
provides education and alternatives to proprietary OS's and
software. They supply technology to small startup companies.
He has memberships in KLUG, Chamber of Commerce, and GLIMA.
Admittedly a HUGE Detroit Red Wings fan who loves NASCAR too.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 06/10/2003

Relational Databases
by Bill Howlett

What's the difference between a flat file and a relational database?
Why is a relational database usually superior? Why should I design
the database -first- and the interface second? These and other
questions will be answered in this introductory explanation of
relational databases. Database newbie? This is for you. Ever had
trouble keeping your data synchronized, normalized, or un-anomalized?
We'll cover that. Not database specific nor an advanced topic, so we
won't be promoting a specific relational database program, just
explaining why we need a relational database and how to use it.

Bill Hollett is the owner of Billtron Services, an independent
contracting entity specializing in web site development and
programming with information interchange via the web.

BIGGER, BETTER LINUX
The Linux 2.6 production kernel, expected to be released later this
year, will enable Linux to handle big, enterprise-class database
applications. New features integrated into the main kernel will
spare users the need to adopt them as back-ported capabilities in
the 2.4 production kernel. Such abilities include support for much
larger amounts of memory, support for a larger number of threads,
improved networking performance, increased storage and types of
storage, and better volume management.

WHY THE BEST FOR LINUX IS STILL TO COME
"While conspiracy theories are fun, Joe Barr is certain of two
things. One is that Linux is going to continue its inexorable
march to the desktop. The second is that the Microsoft monopoly
is not going to go gentle into that good night..."

APACHE V2.0.46 RELEASED
"Apache 2.0.46 has been released. It's an important security-fix
release, fixing both a crash bug [CAN-2003-0245] and a DoS
[CAN-2003-0189], so everybody using prior versions of Apache 2.0
should grab a copy from the nearest mirror and upgrade!

RED HAT REASSURES LINUX USERS [SCO SUCKS!]

against the operating system, although taken seriously by the
company, are baseless..."

SCO'S REAL MOTIVE... A BUYOUT? [WHY $CO $UCK$?]
"Acccording to this article in ComputerWorld, CEO Darl McBride of
SCO has finally discussed the possibility of a buyout by IBM in
public. Among other things, McBride says: "I'm not trying to screw
up the Linux business," he said. "I'm trying to take care of the
shareholders, employees and people who have been having their
rights trampled on."

=====================================================================
SCO VS LINUX... CONTINUED
"ComputerWorld has an interview with Chris Sontag, from SCO. Now
the story has a pretty face." The interview has a variety of
comments worth noting like how much source code SCO thinks has
slipped from unix to linux. This story continues to amaze me.

SCO MIGHT SUE LINUS FOR PATENT INFRINGEMENT? [YEAH RIGHT!]
"[Darl McBride, SCO's chief executive stated] that unless more
companies start licensing SCO's property, he may also sue Linus
Torvalds, who is credited with inventing the Linux operating
system, for patent infringement."

LINDOWS.COM REVELATION COULD BE FATAL BLOW TO SCO CASE
According to the way the GPL works, any code that is legally in
a GPL licensed program must be placed under the GPL. Simply put,
this means that Lindows.com's Linux kernel must consist only of
GPL'ed code. If Lindows.com has indeed licensed enough of SCO's
intellectual property to make its distribution legal in SCO's
eyes, it has purged the Linux kernel of the "poisonous fruit"
(if any actually exists).

YOU CAN HELP STOP THE SCO VS IBM LAWSUIT
You can help stop the SCO attack on IBM and the Linux community.
I'm looking for ways that Unix trade secrets may have been
legally nullified.

HEY SCO, SUE ME!
"The response was not something the author of the petition,
John Everitt, expected. With expectations of perhaps 10
signatories, he was amazed when thousands of Linux users
signed it..."

=====================================================================
WHY A SCO WIN IS A SLAM DUNK!
SCO alleges IBM improperly extended its licensed use of Unix
source code and related information to Linux. This is a big
problem for IBM but of little importance to the general Linux
community.

=====================================================================
SCO-MICROSOFT CONSPIRACY THEORY
The SCO vs. IBM lawsuit gives off a subtle, unpleasant odor Our
Hero couldn't quite place. When SCO set its sights on Linux
distributors and even Linux itself, the source of the stench
became unmistakable -- Redmond. A humorous look at a a potential
smoking gun.

3 MAJOR HARD DRIVE MAKERS RECALLING 40 & 80GB DRIVES?

INTRUSION DETECTION WITH SNORT
"At one point in the not so distant past, Intrusion Detection Systems
(IDSs) were network security applications reserved for Fortune 500
companies with enough IT budget to fork up the Big Dollar, or hard
core packetheads willing to grep through tcpdump or shadow output.
Over the past few years, a new pig on the block, Snort, has put that

KLUG NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO FILL SEVERAL VACANT POSITIONS
Nutrimaster and Education Director volunteer slots are still
vacant. We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting
Firewall" to handle Chamber access control and security issues.
The Chamber has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG
members come and go from the meeting room each Tuesday night.
Bob and Zac need help with this function which requires that
you get to the meetings early and see that the everything is
locked up as the last person leaves. This means being at the
Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging around until 10:00pm. We have
other volunteer positions available and many of these duties
could be shared if you have an interest. GET INVOLVED IN KLUG!
Volunteers are needed for Beginner's Nights and Installfests.
Please contact installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org for more details.
See http://kalamazoolinux.org/organize for position descriptions.

KLUG'S DRIFTWOOD PROJECT SETS WORK DAY FOR JUNE 21ST AT 9:00AM!
The KLUG Driftwood Project will meet on Saturday June 21, 2003
at the Chamber of Commerce meeting site. The meeting is scheduled
for 9:00AM to 12:30PM. This KLUG project is based on the Asterisk
software running on a Linux server (donated by Joe Roman). Asterisk
is a complete PBX in software. It runs on Linux and provides all
of the features you would expect from a PBX and more. Asterisk
does voice over IP in three protocols, and can inter-operate with
almost all standards-based telephony equipment using comparatively
inexpensive hardware. http://www.asterisk.org/

BRUCE SMITH JOINS THE DEVIL LINUX PROJECT TEAM AS A CORE DEVELOPER
Zealous KLUG volunteer and the man behind BS-Ware has recently
joined the Open Source Devil-Linux project development team as a
core developer. Devil-Linux is a special Linux distribution, which
is used for Firewalls / Routers. The goal of Devil-Linux is to
have a small, customizable, and secure Linux. Bruce, an expert
Linux veteran, has the experience and talent to enhance and support
this Open Source project. Look for great things from this security
conscious application after his addition and input take effect.

KLUG NOW OWNS A NEW XGA VIDEO PROJECTOR
Adam reported that KLUG has upgraded the video projector from SVGA
to XGA!!! From 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768, it should boost presentation
viewing pleasure. This projector is well rated:
INFOCUS LP335 DLP PROJECTOR
1000 LUMEN - XGA - LP-0335-V + Extended 12 month warranty
Digital Light Processing DLP which provides sharp images under
variable lighting conditions.
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/office/portable_pc_projectors/
Anyone know of a buyer for our 2 year old KLUG SVGA projector?
We should ask $800 for this unit and it is in excellent condition.
It has about 150 hours on a 1000 hour bulb. Works just fine.
It is an InFocus model LP425ZVB with padded carrying case.
Contact Todd chair@kalamazoolinux.org for more info.
