On the contrary, i've worked with older versions of tar on old sparcs 
and they are not compatable
with the newer versions of tar even on the same sparc station.  Their 
maybe some tar option for backward
compatibility, but i have not found it.  You just have to try to untar 
it and see if it works as far as I know.
