smbclient is broken in the alpha builds, there has been a fair amount of chatter
about this.  Did your smbclient work and then suddenly stop, or what version
change did you perform that busted it>

On the XP boxes do you have simple file sharing disabled?

Can you connect as a local account, such as the local administrator?
