I forgot. Modules are now suffixed with '.ko'. Rusty Russell changed the
module system itself in 2.5, but this change may be unrelated as neither
2.4 nor 2.5 modules are recognized by ldd(1), as are .o files.

module-init-tools is backwards compatible with 2.4 modutils. 2.5 insmod
will, if asked to load a module to > 2.5 kernels, call insmod.old (or,
on Debian, insmod.modutils. Debian uses a function, called dpkg-divert,
to keep modutils and module-init-tools from treading on each other).
