My theory:

I run a Samba-LDAP PDC here on my home net.  What I've noticed is that 
Windows actually keeps files on both the server and the client and 
synchronizes them.  Probably does this using a tool similar to rsync.  This 
happens on the client side not the server side so a Linux box that logs in 
may exhibit different behavior accounting for the differences.
