The requirement for an account is a factor of your mail store and has
little or nothing to do with the MTA.

Most distro's ship with the ancient default mailstore that drops a file
per user in /var/spool/mail.  That is because they also ship with the
ancient, antiquated, and kludgy UW IMAP server.  They ship with that
IMAP server because it requires zero configuration or administration and
works out-of-the-box.
