I've had good luck with console ICQ clients for Linux. The numbers on
how many people actually use IM's are probably quite hard to know. Even
the IM companies probably don't know themselves.

Trillian (Win32 only) is capable of emulating many IM protocols, and can
even connect to IRC, which is still the *nix "IM" of choice.  Also, many
people run more than one client, or they run Trillian with multiple IDs
across multiple IM servers, furthering the confusion.
