Subject: KLUG 10/21 Meeting - Answers to Additional Novell & XIMIAN
Hello, Adam,

I wanted to follow up with you and the KLUG members with answers to the
additional Novell & XIMIAN questions which were raised at the 10/21
meeting.
Joe Felisky from Novell and John Stanfield from XIMIAN joined forces to
answer the following:

1. What Linux desktop distributions does RedCarpet support?

The RedCarpet daemon does not *depend* on the desktop GUI. The
RedCarpet support for V2 is supported on Red Hat 7.2,7.3,8.0 & 9. Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1, AS, ES, & WS. Mandrake Linux 9.1. SUSE SLD
1.0, SUSE Linux 8.2, and SUSE SLES 8.

2. Will Nterprise Linux Services support AppleTalk? (An audience member
said that SAMBA 3+ supports AppleTalk).

>From www.novell.com/linux "Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 supports NFS,
CIFS and SAMBA file access protocols." Nterprise Linux Services 1.0
uses Samba version 2.2.8. Mac OS/X supports SMB/CIFS for connection.
Novell's documentation states, "In addition to Linux, Samba initiatives
provide support for other platforms such as Apple Computer's operating
systems."

Here is some additional Samba documentation for OS/X:

Now there is NetATalk which is open source solution for Appletalk on
Linux/Unix. Originally developed by the University of Michigan, it can
work in conjunction with Samba. Here is a site with a link about
NetATalk. Actually, starting with Linux Kernel 1.3, the kernel supported
Appletalk. Now getting the protocols up and going is another story and
that is where NetATalk comes in.

Here is a link to Red Hat's site talking about how to implement
AppleTalk

We appreciate you sharing these answers with your members. Please feel
free to contact me if we can be of further assistance in any way.

Sincerely,
