I beleive the main differences among distributions are how they are installed 
and updated, and what filesystem layout they support, perhaps desktop defaults.
One can also define them by principle libraries, like libc6, glibc, etc. If
you're looking for other differences, I thnk you'll have a rough time finding
them; Linux is still very much Linux once it's up and running.

There's plenty of room for specialty distributions, which cater to specific 
audiences or needs, such as IPcopy (firewalling/security), Lycoris (desktop
and general-purpose user) Demo Linux, and so on.

Disclaimer: The specific distributions above may not be best-of-breed; they
are at least leading contenders in their areas, it is not my intent to start
additional (perhaps endless) debate on which specialty distribution is best
in its niche.
