[KLUG Members] Samba novice fumbling around

Flush with Thanksgiving feast and cheer, I am venturing out into SAMBA-land
for the first time today. I've read a couple of how-to's, looked over the
too-skimpy KLUG materials, and examined the smb.conf file with some care.

To start, I wanted to set up a simple share... no Domain controller or
profile stuff for starters. I got all that set up (right permissions? who
knows?) and started the (2.2.7a) server, then rushed over to my NT (4.0 SP6)
machine and tried to get to the share.

Lo and Behold! I actually got a sensible error message!

"The account is not authorized to login from this station"

But right now, I'm at something of a loss as to what to do next. I have...
Server and client can ping each other.
Made sure that the host name of the client is in LMHOSTS on the server,
        with the its IP address.
Set up "pcguest" as a user on the server.
Made sure that the client hostname (with $) is in /etc/passwd
   Did an smbpasswd -m -a hostname-of-client

Advise on the specific point, or (better) a good on-line reference for this
version (samba.org seems to have moved on to 3.x, maybe I should, too?) would
be much appreciated.
