Novell's Nterprise Linux Services
by Joe Felisky Novell Tech Director - Great Lakes & Mid-states
Novell embraces the emergence of Linux and open-source software
as key enabling technologies for enterprise solutions. Novell
Nterprise Linux Services is a crucial component of the Novell
promise to deliver One Net - a world without information boundaries.
Novell Nterprise Linux Services let you take advantage of the
open-source benefits of Linux combined with the powerful set of
enterprise services previously only available on NetWare®.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
******************************
Want to see the slides from the Novell presentation?
Check the past presentations page on the KLUG web site:
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/
Joe Felisky was wearing a Ximian t-shirt and a big smile as he
told us about Novell's transitioning into the Enterprise Linux
marketplace. He had two slide presentations, the first covering
Novell Nterprise services with overall Novell strategies and
offerings. The second was about Ximian products. For marketing
information and detailed explanations of the products see the
sites listed above. Novell is excited about Linux and Open Source
Software. Novell sees that it has an existing IT support base to
take into the new market which has great value and opportunity.
The first slide show focused on Novell Nterprise. All of the
components of Nterprise are available now. A unified release
is scheduled for November 2003. Novell is transitioning from
Netware 6.5 to fully Linux empowered Netware 7.0 with a release
date estimated in August 2005. In addition to the Nterprise
information, we heard about Novell's general Linux and product
strategies. Sure sounded like Novell is fully committed to the
transition to Linux. The integration of the Novell File System
with the Linux platform is scheduled for August of 2004.
Nterprise now runs on top of SuSE, Red Hat, or Novell's existing
network kernel. Novell provides full OS and application support.

Administrative Services iManager
The second slide show focused on the acquisition of Ximian and
that product line. We saw a Linux adoption graphic that showed
strong growth rates in both server and desktop implementations.
The purchase of Ximian was a key strategic move for Novell and
provided them with both products and OSS culture expertise. Joe
cut this slide show short as we had recently had Chris Lahey
from Ximian Gnome present and he had covered most of this info.

GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA ( READ P A R T Y ! ! ! )
by Adam Williams and Brian Ritz
EVERYONE - other LUGs, other technical groups, etc... - are
invited to send a team to this years 2003 Geek Jeopardy event.
Just let me know your coming - programdirector@kalamazoolinux.org
Come celebrate the true joy of being geek - knowing all that
minutia, arcana, and esoteric information that is so handy when
drafting new pick-up lines! This years categories are sure to
result in a cornucopia of sardonic quips, mythopoetical
exclamations, and maybe even a few broken spectacles. What more
thrilling scene is there than the victor's squeals of pure
geeker-joy while the defeated shout curses at them in a
combination of Klingon and Sindarin?
Players: Up to four team members per round, you can switch out
as many players as you want between rounds. Each team is
permitted two substitutions per round at any point. An
accidental third substitution will cost the team 2048 points
in the single jeopardy round, and 4096 points in the double
jeopardy round. Any additional substitution will cost the team
10,248 points, regardless of the round. No substitutions are
permitted during final jeopardy. Closed book, no laptops
(Bruce!).
Team with the final highest (positive scores only [$score > 0],
not absolute value [!abs($score)]) score wins.
The 2003 Geek Jeopardy Categories:
Single Jeopardy: "Geek Cinema", "Fonts", "Kerberos V", Emulators",
"Firewalls", "Groupware", "DNS", "Geek Slang", "SQL", "WiFi",
"NASA", and "2.6"
Each single jeopardy category contains question worth 1, 2, 4, 8,
16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and 1024 points.
Double Jeopardy: "Geeks & Myths", "8 Bit", "LDAP", "True UNIX(s)",
"CLI", "Not IP", "ARPA", "VOIP" "Mono & .Net", "GNOME", "In The
Court", and "C++"
Each double jeopardy category contains a question worth 2, 4, 8,
16, 32, 64, 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 points.
And of course the final Jeopardy question - Well, you'll have to
be there to discover that category.
Adam Williams is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple
of hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging networking
and configuration problems. Adam is known as an LDAP wizard in
the global Linux community and has written a classic piece that
explains how it works and what is necessary to get LDAP functional.
He is also part of the early core of organizers and nurturers of
KLUG and has served as Program Director for many years, providing
the content of KLUG's world class educational meetings each week.
The Eloquent Master of Ceremonies and originator of the legendary
KLUG GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA provides stellar answers in search
of those categorized Linux culture focused questions.
BE THERE OR ELSE!!!
Brian Ritz is currently working in commercial logistics
and has been working with Linux almost exclusively as
a user of the Whitemice.Org network. He holds a degree in
Finance from Grand Valley State University and is KLUG's
resident expert on GNUCash. Brian is a KLUG Officer, in
the position of Treasurer of the Michigan Corporation and
IRS 501c3 Non-profit organization.

LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD
Linus Torvalds wants me to believe he's too boring for this story.
The creator of the Linux operating system portrays himself as a
mild-mannered soul leading a humdrum life, just another guy lucky
enough to own a McMansion in the hills above San Jose courtesy of
the money-mad late '90s. Before agreeing to meet me, Torvalds sent
an email imagining that I'd be overwhelmed by the tedium of
hanging around with the likes of him.

CAN OPEN SOURCE TRULY SAVE THE WORLD?
"The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), convened by
the United Nations at the urging of the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU), intends to address the global
economic, societal, and political changes being wrought as our
information-based society replaces the old industrial one. Free
and Open Source Software (FOSS), was to play a major role in
WSIS's plans for closing these information gaps. Until recently."

NEW APACHE MODULE FOR WEB INTRUSION DETECTION
"Mod_security 1.7 has been released. Mod_security is an open source
intrusion detection and prevention engine for web applications.
It operates embedded into the web server, acting as a powerful
umbrella - shielding applications from attacks. The latest release
adds output scanning to Apache 2.x; the ability to analyze cookies;
functionality to change the identity of the web server; several new
actions for rule grouping; new null-byte attack anti-evasion code."

BOOK REVIEWS: THE ART OF UNIX PROGRAMMING
"Eric S. Raymond (or ESR) is widely known for the groundbreaking
series of essays in his book, The Cathedral and the Bazaar. In
TCatB, he makes a credible case for why open source sofware works
so well, and why community-supported software won't put developers
out of a job. The arguments presented in Cathedral and the Bazaar
were persuasive and original and now regarded as obvious. In his
new book, Art of Unix Programming (available for free on the web),
ESR stakes an even bolder claim: that initial design decisions
make Unix uniquely well-suited to take advantage of open source's
power. This book is an attempt to explain why Unix is so...well,
Unixy."

SUN SOLARIS VS LINUX: THE X86 SMACK-DOWN
"Tony Bourke put together a long article, benchmarking File System,
System, Compilation, OpenSSL and Web Performance for both Linux and
Solaris on x86 hardware. While SPARC's Solaris is said to be more
optimized than its x86 counterpart on the other hand so is Linux 2.6
compared to 2.4. Solaris-x86 performed well in the tests, but Linux
2.4 seems to win most of the tests and the overall impressions."

"...a lengthy article about the issues that enterprises face when
vying for Linux+Windows interoperability, as most of the corporate
infrastructures are seldom monocultural. What's also interesting
is the InformationWeek surveys of the IT professionals. The
following questions are asked and the responses to them are nicely
graphed: 1) Reasons for choosing Windows, 2) Reasons for choosing
Linux, 3) Top Windows concerns, 4) Top Linux concerns, 5) Top

LEARNING FROM KALEIDOSCOPE
Hordes of Free Software and Unix geeks are switching to OS X and
loving it. It's unlikely that any of the Unix projects being ported
to OS X will suffer Kaleidoscope's ultimate fate, simply because
their code is open and already runs on other operating systems.
But some projects might be in for nasty surprises when new versions
of OS X come out that break existing ports in deep and fundamental
ways.

MOZILLA V1.5 - NOT JUST FOR GEEKS ANYMORE
An open-source alternative browser project for the developer

THE CHURCH OF LINUX IS A HOUSE DIVIDED
Many fans of the Linux computer operating system exhibit a fervor
bordering on religious. But even this church has its schisms. Linux
often is held up as the shining achievement of the "open source"
movement: Finnish whiz kid Linus Torvalds got the software rolling
during 1991 and programmers around the world keep improving it free
of charge, for anyone to use. Provided, of course, that they share
any tweaks they make. But before there was Linux or open source,
there was GNU.

Please don't make us RANT about organization needs for volunteers!
We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting Firewall"
to handle Chamber access control and security issues. The Chamber
has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG members come and
go from the meeting room each Tuesday night. Bob truly does need
help with this function which requires that you get to the meetings
early and see that everything is locked up as the meeting attendees
leave. We have several other KLUG volunteer positions available
and many of these duties could be shared if you have an interest.
