Novell's Nterprise Linux Services=20
by Joe Felisky Novell Tech Director - Great Lakes & Mid-states

Novell embraces the emergence of Linux and open-source software=20
as key enabling technologies for enterprise solutions. Novell=20
Nterprise Linux Services is a crucial component of the Novell=20
promise to deliver One Net - a world without information boundaries.=20
Novell Nterprise Linux Services let you take advantage of the=20
open-source benefits of Linux combined with the powerful set of=20
enterprise services previously only available on NetWare=AE.=20

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
******************************
Want to see the slides from the Novell presentation?
Check the past presentations page on the KLUG web site:=20
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/=20

Joe Felisky was wearing a Ximian t-shirt and a big smile as he
told us about Novell's transitioning into the Enterprise Linux=20
marketplace. He had two slide presentations, the first covering
Novell Nterprise services with overall Novell strategies and=20
offerings. The second was about Ximian products. For marketing=20
information and detailed explanations of the products see the=20
sites listed above. Novell is excited about Linux and Open Source=20
Software. Novell sees that it has an existing IT support base to=20
take into the new market which has great value and opportunity.

The first slide show focused on Novell Nterprise. All of the
components of Nterprise are available now. A unified release=20
is scheduled for November 2003. Novell is transitioning from
Netware 6.5 to fully Linux empowered Netware 7.0 with a release
date estimated in August 2005. In addition to the Nterprise=20
information, we heard about Novell's general Linux and product=20
strategies. Sure sounded like Novell is fully committed to the
transition to Linux. The integration of the Novell File System
with the Linux platform is scheduled for August of 2004.=20

Nterprise now runs on top of SuSE, Red Hat, or Novell's existing
network kernel. Novell provides full OS and application support.

The second slide show focused on the acquisition of Ximian and
that product line. We saw a Linux adoption graphic that showed=20
strong growth rates in both server and desktop implementations.
The purchase of Ximian was a key strategic move for Novell and
provided them with both products and OSS culture expertise. Joe
cut this slide show short as we had recently had Chris Lahey
from Ximian Gnome present and he had covered most of this info.

Joe has been with Novell since 1997, working first with the=20
Enterprise Accounts team. His responsibilities as Technical=20
Director for the Great Lakes region include leading the Systems=20
Engineering staffs in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Prior=20
to joining Novell, Joe spent over 12 years as a consultant for=20
Electronic Data Systems working as a strategist for the General=20
Motors account.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 10/28/2003=20
******************************************************************=20
GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA ( READ P A R T Y ! ! ! )
by Adam Williams and Brian Ritz

EVERYONE - other LUGs, other technical groups, etc... - are=20
invited to send a team to this years 2003 Geek Jeopardy event.=20
Just let me know your coming - programdirector@kalamazoolinux.org=20

Come celebrate the true joy of being geek - knowing all that=20
minutia, arcana, and esoteric information that is so handy when=20
drafting new pick-up lines! This years categories are sure to=20
result in a cornucopia of sardonic quips, mythopoetical=20
exclamations, and maybe even a few broken spectacles. What more=20
thrilling scene is there than the victor's squeals of pure=20
geeker-joy while the defeated shout curses at them in a=20
combination of Klingon and Sindarin?

Players: Up to four team members per round, you can switch out=20
as many players as you want between rounds. Each team is=20
permitted two substitutions per round at any point. An=20
accidental third substitution will cost the team 2048 points=20
in the single jeopardy round, and 4096 points in the double=20
jeopardy round. Any additional substitution will cost the team=20
10,248 points, regardless of the round. No substitutions are=20
permitted during final jeopardy. Closed book, no laptops=20
(Bruce!).

Team with the final highest (positive scores only [$score > 0],=20
not absolute value [!abs($score)]) score wins.

The 2003 Geek Jeopardy Categories:

Single Jeopardy: "Geek Cinema", "Fonts", "Kerberos V", Emulators",=20
"Firewalls", "Groupware", "DNS", "Geek Slang", "SQL", "WiFi",=20
"NASA", and "2.6"

Each single jeopardy category contains question worth 1, 2, 4, 8,=20
16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and 1024 points.

Double Jeopardy: "Geeks & Myths", "8 Bit", "LDAP", "True UNIX(s)",=20
"CLI", "Not IP", "ARPA", "VOIP" "Mono & .Net", "GNOME", "In The=20
Court", and "C++"

Each double jeopardy category contains a question worth 2, 4, 8,=20
16, 32, 64, 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 points.

And of course the final Jeopardy question - Well, you'll have to=20
be there to discover that category.

Adam Williams is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,=20
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple=20
of hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.=20
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also=20
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular=20
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,=20
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging networking=20
and configuration problems. Adam is known as an LDAP wizard in
the global Linux community and has written a classic piece that
explains how it works and what is necessary to get LDAP functional.=20
He is also part of the early core of organizers and nurturers of
KLUG and has served as Program Director for many years, providing
the content of KLUG's world class educational meetings each week.
The Eloquent Master of Ceremonies and originator of the legendary
KLUG GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA provides stellar answers in search=20
of those categorized Linux culture focused questions.=20
BE THERE OR ELSE!!!=20

Brian Ritz is currently working in commercial logistics
and has been working with Linux almost exclusively as=20
a user of the Whitemice.Org network. He holds a degree in=20
Finance from Grand Valley State University and is KLUG's=20
resident expert on GNUCash. Brian is a KLUG Officer, in
the position of Treasurer of the Michigan Corporation and
IRS 501c3 Non-profit organization.

Linus Torvalds wants me to believe he's too boring for this story.=20

BOOK REVIEWS: THE ART OF UNIX PROGRAMMING

series of essays in his book, The Cathedral and the Bazaar. In=20
TCatB, he makes a credible case for why open source sofware works=20
so well, and why community-supported software won't put developers=20
out of a job. The arguments presented in Cathedral and the Bazaar
were persuasive and original and now regarded as obvious. In his=20
new book, Art of Unix Programming (available for free on the web),=20
ESR stakes an even bolder claim: that initial design decisions=20
make Unix uniquely well-suited to take advantage of open source's=20
power. This book is an attempt to explain why Unix is so...well,=20

programming I held at Linux Kongress 2003. The benchmark results=20
turned out to be surprising enough to present them on their own.=20
This ought to end those pesky flame wars about whose IP stack or=20
memory management scales better. Or maybe not."=20

LEARNING FROM KALEIDOSCOPE
Hordes of Free Software and Unix geeks are switching to OS X and=20
loving it. It's unlikely that any of the Unix projects being ported=20
to OS X will suffer Kaleidoscope's ultimate fate, simply because=20
their code is open and already runs on other operating systems.=20
But some projects might be in for nasty surprises when new versions=20
of OS X come out that break existing ports in deep and fundamental=20
ways.=20

THE CHURCH OF LINUX IS A HOUSE DIVIDED
Many fans of the Linux computer operating system exhibit a fervor=20
bordering on religious. But even this church has its schisms. Linux=20
often is held up as the shining achievement of the "open source"=20
movement: Finnish whiz kid Linus Torvalds got the software rolling=20
during 1991 and programmers around the world keep improving it free=20
of charge, for anyone to use. Provided, of course, that they share=20
any tweaks they make. But before there was Linux or open source,=20
there was GNU.

<BR><BR>The first slide show focused on Novell Nterprise. All of the<BR>com=
