GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA ( READ P A R T Y ! ! ! )
by Adam Williams and Brian Ritz

EVERYONE - other LUGs, other technical groups, etc... - were
invited to send a team to this years 2003 Geek Jeopardy event.
programdirector@kalamazoolinux.org

KLUG celebrated the true joy of being a geek - knowing all that
minutia, arcana, and esoteric information that is so handy when
drafting new pick-up lines! This year's categories resulted
in a cornucopia of sardonic quips, mythopoetical exclamations,
and maybe even a few broken spectacles. What more thrilling
scene is there than the victor's squeals of pure geeker-joy
while the defeated shout curses at them in a combination of
Klingon and Sindarin?

GEEK JEOPARDY PARTY SUMMARY:
******************************
It was a major geek chuckle fest complete with pizza, coffee,
soda, chips, cookies, peanuts, and more! Geek Jeopardy was a
giant success again this year! The humor was thick and the
questions humbled even the most knowledgeable Linux wizards.

The scores were evidence of the difficulty of the answers.
That made the fun increase exponentially! Many sat in utter
disbelief when they heard the answers. Adam made sure that
few of the 2048 and 1024 pointers would be claimed. Brian
Ritz did an excellent job in running the scoring spreadsheet
and keeping the game board updated. The OpenOffice.org Calc
program was used to list the categories, points, and team
totals. It worked flawlessly on the Toshiba laptop running
Red Hat v9 and was projected up on the screen with the KLUG
XGA projector.

Bruce Smith and John Bridleman were up to their old gamer
domination tricks again this year. They ran the 1024k and
512k answers knowing that if no one could come up with the
question they would retain control of the selections. That
sly strategy resulted in a second place showing. It was fun
to watch the KLUG participants sit silently stunned by the
difficulty of the higher point answers! Of course they were
equally stunned when someone could state the question for
one of those answers. In the first round only one of the
1024 answers was correctly questioned and none of 512 ones
were won.

We nearly lost the Master of Ceremonies to an uncontrollable
laughter attack around the middle of the competition. During
the night there were several times that people called out
questions for the answers without ringing in. These comical
responses turned out to be right on more than one occasion.
'Who is Microsoft' was the question to one of the standards
answers and 'Who is SCO' was the question to at least four
answers. If a team had just sat silently in their seats and
not touched the buzzers they would have been the winners.

Adam and Brian did a fantastic job of preparing for and
organizing the Geek Jeopardy event. Here is how the teams
scored...

TEAM A Dirk Bartley & Robert G. Brown
SCORE Jeopardy = -2552 Double Jeopardy = -2522

TEAM B Bruce Smith & John Bridleman & John ?
SCORE Jeopardy = -1928 Double Jeopardy = -2432

W I N N E R S W I N N E R S W I N N E R S W I N N E R S
TEAM C Jon Smitley & Peter Buxton & Bill Hollett
SCORE Jeopardy = -1306 Double Jeopardy = -1794
W I N N E R S W I N N E R S W I N N E R S W I N N E R S

TEAM D Alan Tanner & Andrew Thompson & Ralph Worick
SCORE Jeopardy = -2280 Double Jeopardy = -7004

None of the teams could enter Final Jeopardy! You can't bet
negative money in the round. The category was PHP and the
answer may as well have been spoken in Klingon or Sindarin.
Even the resident PHP guru's sat in silence shaking their
heads. Only 364 days left until Geek Jeopardy 2004! Can
Adam top himself again? There were threats to form a question
committee next year to insure easier questions. Seriously,
everyone was laughing and griping and enjoying the fun!

Geek Jeopardy champions were Wes Leonard and Andrew Thompson
last year. Jon Smitley, Peter Buxton, and Bill Hollett will
be the reigning champions for the next year. Congratulations!

GEEK JEOPARDY RULES:
========================
Players: Up to four team members per round, you can switch out
as many players as you want between rounds. Each team is
permitted two substitutions per round at any point. An
accidental third substitution will cost the team 2048 points
in the single jeopardy round, and 4096 points in the double
jeopardy round. Any additional substitution will cost the team
10,248 points, regardless of the round. No substitutions are
permitted during final jeopardy. Closed book, no laptops
(Bruce!).

Team with the final highest (positive scores only [$score > 0],
not absolute value [!abs($score)]) score wins.

The 2003 Geek Jeopardy Categories:

Single Jeopardy: "Geek Cinema", "Fonts", "Kerberos V", Emulators",
"Firewalls", "Groupware", "DNS", "Geek Slang", "SQL", "WiFi",
"NASA", and "2.6"

Each single jeopardy category contains question worth 1, 2, 4, 8,
16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and 1024 points.

Double Jeopardy: "Geeks & Myths", "8 Bit", "LDAP", "True UNIX(s)",
"CLI", "Not IP", "ARPA", "VOIP" "Mono & .Net", "GNOME", "In The
Court", and "C++"

Each double jeopardy category contains a question worth 2, 4, 8,
16, 32, 64, 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 points.

And of course the final Jeopardy question - Well, you had to
be there to discover that.

Adam Williams is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple
of hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging networking
and configuration problems. Adam is known as an LDAP wizard in
the global Linux community and has written a classic piece that
explains how it works and what is necessary to get LDAP functional.
He is also part of the early core of organizers and nurturers of
KLUG and has served as Program Director for many years, providing
the content of KLUG's world class educational meetings each week.
The Eloquent Master of Ceremonies and originator of the legendary
KLUG GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA provides stellar answers in search
of those categorized Linux culture focused questions.
BE THERE OR ELSE!!!

Brian Ritz is currently working in commercial logistics
and has been working with Linux almost exclusively as
a user of the Whitemice.Org network. He holds a degree in
Finance from Grand Valley State University and is KLUG's
resident expert on GNUCash. Brian is a KLUG Officer, in
the position of Treasurer of the Michigan Corporation and
IRS 501c3 Non-profit organization.

Thanks to John Bridleman for borrowing the Jeopardy console,
lights, and buzzers for the event again this year. William
G. Jordan, the KLUG Nutrimaster, provided an array of tasty
goodies for participants to snack on. The pizza was from
Pizza King and was ordered and delivered to the meeting by
Robert G. Brown. Thanks to everyone who participated in the
fun.

===============================================================

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Todd Pillars is the Chairperson of KLUG! His first PC
was a 1981 TRS-80 Model 3 2.03Mhz, 16K ram, 5 1/4 floppy
running TRS-DOS and QBASIC. In 1997 he started running
a web development company that hosted web sites with Red
Hat 5.2. He was named the Executive Director of Southwest
Michigan Information Technology Institute in 2003. SMITI
provides education and alternatives to proprietary OS's and
software. They supply technology to small startup companies.
He has memberships in KLUG, Chamber of Commerce, and GLIMA.
Admittedly a HUGE Detroit Red Wings fan who loves NASCAR too.

FEDORA CORE TEST 3 REVIEW [FORMERLY RED HAT LINUX]
"In my experience there are a few problems and a few bugs that
would keep me from recommending it as an everyday desktop
replacement, but nonetheless, Fedora is an Operating System
(distro) worth watching... At first I tried upgrading my earlier
RedHat Linux 9 install, but decided, ultimately, to perform a

WHAT'S COMPELLING ABOUT OSAF'S CHANDLER
Our product (code-named "Chandler" after the great detective
novelist Raymond Chandler,) is a Personal Information Manager
(PIM) intended for use in everyday information and communication
tasks, such as composing and reading email, managing an appointment
calendar and keeping a contact list. Because of the ease with which
Chandler users can share information with others, Chandler might be
called the first Interpersonal Information Manager. (The term PIM
was first used in conjunction with the product Lotus Agenda in the
1980's. Chandler is the spiritual descendant of Agenda (and has a
common designer in Mitch Kapor of Lotus 1-2-3 fame.)

A NOVELL LINUX SPECIALIST?
"Our Novell partners differentiate themselves in the marketplace
by promoting their areas of expertise or specializations; this
allows their customers to know what their skill sets are and what
they can reasonably expect these partners to provide for them. As
we embrace Linux, we would like to extend the title of 'Linux
specialist' to partners who merit it. Before we move forward on
this initiative, we would like to ask the Linux community for
guidance on what should constitute a Linux specialist. Should we
require certifications such as LPI and the RHCE/RHCT, or are
there other more valuable ways of demonstrating Linux competency?"

PROGENY PORTS RED HAT'S ANACONDA TO DEBIAN
"According to this message from Ian Murdock on the Debian
developer's mailing list, the Progeny folks have ported Red
Hat's Anaconda installer to Debian. They have also written a
tool that "facilitates the creation of Anaconda-based Debian
installation CD sets". They are also engaged in other
interesting unification work, and hope to be able to allow
collections of managed RPM and .deb packages to coexist
side-by-side."

IF I COULD RE-WRITE LINUX
In this NewsForge article the author speculates on building a
next-generation operating system aimed at 64-bit hardware. "Linux
is a pure 32-bit operating system written from scratch for 32-bit
processors. It doesn't suffer from any 16-bit baggage code. Now
Linux is being ported to various 64-bit processors. It will be a
while before all the code is compiled and optimised to take

HOW MICROSOFT'S MISUNDERSTANDING OF OPEN SOURCE HURTS US ALL
This week, speaking at a Gartner conference in Orlando, Florida,
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said some fascinating things about
Linux and about Open Source software in general. And thanks to
those remarks and the blinding realization they caused for me,
I finally understand exactly why Microsoft doesn't understand
Open Source.

REVIEW OF MAC OS X V10.3
"The NY Times has a review of all the new Panther features which
states that the 150 odd features added are so good that calling
it a 0.1 upgrade is not fair. It finds the new Expose feature and
other security features (like being able to encrypt/decrypt the
entire home directory on the fly) extremely appealing. Gripes
include the $130 price tag and the (somewhat) lack of backward
compatibility."

LINUX ON THE DESKTOP: ON THE WAY, SLOWLY
"The question is, how do we get from 1 percent to 2 percent
(of desktops), not 1 percent to 20 percent," Friedman said,
during a presentation at the Enterprise Linux Forum Conference
and Expo in Washington, D.C. Google statistics show that 1
percent of its search requests come from Linux machines, 3
percent from Apple Macintosh PCs, and most of the rest from
various versions of Windows. A study released by IDC this
month noted small growth in both Windows and Linux on the
client side, with Windows maintaining more than 93 percent
of the client market.

GARTNER CLAIMS THERE ARE EIGHT LINUX DESKTOP MYTHS
We will list the myths Federica Troni, a senior Gartner analyst,
told the hundreds of PC system builders here at the conference.
* 1 Linux will be cheaper than Windows because StarOffice can be
used instead of MS Office
* 2 Linux is free
* 3 No forced upgrades
* 4 Linux will require significantly less labour to manage
* 5 Linux will have a lower total cost of ownership than Windows
because of available management tools
* 6 Hardware will be able to be kept longer if Linux is used or
holder hardware can be used
* 7 Applications will be cheap or free
* 8 Transferable skills

CERTIFICATIONS A MUST FOR LINUX ADMINS?
Enterprise IT administrators holding a Linux certification are in
possession of a coveted confirmation of their skills with the
operating system. Experts say as more enterprises explore the
potential cost savings and efficiencies promised with a switch
to Linux, admins holding a Linux cert will be higher on the list
for new jobs, promotions or pay raises. "Bosses are telling
managers to get their Linux hats on, that they are going to be
using it very soon," said Ross Brunson, director of Linux and
Unix education with Philadelphia-based The Training Camp, an
outfit that trains and prepares administrators for certification
exams.

WHAT USERS WANT FROM LINUX
Enhanced system management capabilities, better security, support
for third-party drivers and more unity among the various
distributions top user wish lists when it comes to Linux. They
also would like to see more of their peers embrace the open
source operating system as it evolves into a platform capable
of supporting even the most-critical layers in the data center.
"One of the biggest hurdles that Linux has to overcome to be a
bigger player in the enterprise is FUD [fear, uncertainty and
doubt]," says Timothy Kennedy, a senior projects engineer at
content-services firm YellowBrix in Alexandria, Va. "As Linux
continues to prove itself in the enterprise, corporations are
becoming more confident of the performance and savings that
Linux offers. And with corporate support available [from
companies like Dell, HP and IBM], it provides some peace of
mind."

suggestions for topics and possible speaker referrals. Do you
know anyone who is using Linux in Southwest Michigan and might
be willing to share their Linux expertise by making a technical
presentation? Professional, individual, or commercial speakers
on Linux accepted. Contact programdirector@kalamazoolinux.org
with your referrals and ideas. See the meeting schedule for open
dates. http://www.kalamazoolinux.org/meetings/schedule.php3
