Is your switch a dumb switch or one of the fancy managed switches?
(can you telnet to the switch to configure it, or manage it with SNMP?)

If so, it may have options like VLAN (Virtual LAN, which isolates some
ports from other ports), and other options mentioned above, which may
cause you problems if not configured correctly.  Factory default
settings should work fine, reset the switch if you can.

If it's a dumb switch without any configurable options, junk it.
