I would be interested in pursuing the certification.

An advantage (and challenge?) of doing it ourselves is that we can tailor
what we do to the differing levels of knowledge of our membership (and draw
on those differing levels for presentations?).

A drawback of doing it ourselves is lack of classroom equipment. Since most
everyone working on this would have Linux boxes at home, this would probably
only be a challenge in working on networking/server stuff. But these days
maybe everyone has enough of a home network that that too wouldn't be a
problem. And some of the $1100 they are saving people could use to buy an
extra box or two...?

Re the GRCC program, I would be curious to know how this program relates to
their regular course offerings. It's interesting that this seems to be a
project of the college marketers rather than the CIS dept. And the price
doesn't seem to reflect community college course prices. (A one-semester
course at KVCC currently costs about $160 for three credit hours--ca 45
classroom hours.)

The UNIX-Linux course at KVCC covers a lot of the basics quite well (the
"quite well" depending, of course, on the instructor). My guess is that in
one semester the course covers about half of what someone starting with no
knowledge of UNIX-Linux systems, command line operations, etc. would have to
cover for a basic certification test.
