[KLUG Members] How to compile kernel 2.6?

Hi
What are the exact steps of compiling the kernel 2.6? I am not clear about
that. I think following steps are necessary

make mrproper (What is it use for?)
make clean (Is this require?)
make xconfig
make

make modules
