You should be able to compile a module FOR the kernel, without compiling 
THE kernel.

Agree, even I don't compile kernels anymore;  and there is very very very 
little reason to ever do so.

No;  what kind of VPN is it?  PPTP, IPSec, L2TP, etc...  Cisco's can do 
lots of different things.
