I've encountered this before, but it isn't HDCD.  HDCD discs play
without incident in any decent player, including being ripable.

There are a variety of 'copy protection' mechanisms that result in
behaviour like this;  I have a couple of different CDs that will play in
various odd mixes of players: CD-ROMs, car stereo, boom-box, etc...
Probably not what the OEM intended.
