If you want a large-capacity one (can hold several books), I love my
Archos Jukebox Recorder 20. It may be hard to find, but it's worth it.
20g capacity, a little uglier and bulkier than the iPod, but less than
half the price, and it's got a great open-source community writing
firmware for it at http://www.rockbox.org. It has onboard encryption
for recording to mp3 from mic or input, has 10 hours or more of battery
life with good NiMH rechargeables, is USB 2 compatible... it's great.

Don't get the FM Recorder or any later ones--Micro$oft got to Archos
eventually, and they're not easily compatible with Linux. (Damn!) At
least, not with my old RH8.
