I suggest DSL (Damn Small Linux), it's just under 50mb, and lightning fast on old machines. (runs nicely on an old 468 I have)

If your interested in more features, check out SALX, it's not a Knoppix rip, and in fact Slackware based (That means it's better!)

If it's only getting a shell, there are many rescue discs that do this, just do a search on freshmeat for LiveCD or rescuecd...
